The ANC will investigate whether its former councillors in Tlokwe have registered as independent candidates.

“The ANC will investigate such allegations with the IEC [Independent Electoral Commission] and will be guided by the ANC constitution, particularly rule 25,” ANC North West spokesman Kenny Morolong said yesterday.

The Star reported yesterday eight of the 14 Tlokwe councillors who were expelled from the African National Congress last month had registered as independent candidates with the IEC.

The newspaper reported that the councillors registered in Mahikeng, North West, on Monday for the by-elections in Potchefstroom on September 18.

The councillors’ expulsions were overturned on Saturday by the ANC’s national disciplinary committee.

The ANC’s former chief whip in Tlokwe, David Kham, reportedly told the newspaper he was one of the eight.

“Yes, eight of us met the IEC deadline to register as candidates. I am done with the ANC,” Kham was quoted as saying.

North West IEC electoral officer Tumi Thiba told the newspaper the candidates’ names would be made public after the IEC had conducted quality assurances on the documents provided.

The 14 councillors were expelled in July after the ANC’s provincial disciplinary committee (PDC) found them guilty of four counts of misconduct for participating in a motion of no confidence against Tlokwe mayor Maphetle Maphetle.

He was replaced by Democratic Alliance councillor Annette Combrink.

Morolong said the ANC would also contest a by-election in Ramotshere Moiloa (Zeerust).

A rally had been planned at Ikageng, near Potchefstroom, on September 15.
