ANC volunteer gunned down ‘to instil fear’

2014-05-08 12:43

Senior ANC leaders will today visit the family of a party volunteer who was gunned down at an information table outside a polling station on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast shortly after the close of voting last night.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was shot dead just after 9pm at Lindelani, a rural community about 20km from KwaDukuza (Stanger) north of Durban.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the attack took place while the volunteer was with a group of other ANC members at a party information table.

The killers then fled.

Zikalala said it was clear that the killing, which he described as “barbaric”, had been aimed at instilling fear among ANC volunteers at Lindelani, a community that had been a no-go area for the governing party over the years.

Zikalala called on ANC members to “remain calm and resist being intimidated by this act of cowardice”.

He said the ANC would meet SAPS top management in the province to ensure that the killing was taken seriously and the murderers brought to book.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our killed comrade at this difficult time and we wish them strength and fortitude during this time of sorrow,” he said.
