The ANC has defended President Jacob Zuma after damning findings against him by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, and he wants some of her findings on Nkandla to be reviewed.

The party has questioned differences in the findings of Madonsela’s report and that of the interministerial task team. For example, the task team report said the removal of Zuma’s R1 million kraal and chicken run was for security reasons, yet Madonsela found these were non-security features.

However, the ANC said the reports were similar concerning:

» The finding that the state didn’t spend money on Zuma’s private dwellings;

» That Zuma did not mislead Parliament when he said he had secured his own bond; and

» That there was no political interference; and

That Zuma’s brothers did not benefit from the project.

“Areas of disagreement as to what should be done with costs of the relocation of the kraal, the chicken run, the visitors’ centre, the swimming pool and the so-called amphitheatre must be addressed and reconciled by government.

“If agreement cannot be reached within a short space of time, competent institutions of state must review the reports and make a determination. This highlights the dangers of two state institutions investigating the same matter,” said ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe.

Mantashe avoided questions about whether or not the ANC will call Zuma to account.

The ANC said the findings would not alter the ANC's election list.
