ANC wins Northern Cape

The ANC emerged on top in the Northern Cape in local government elections, taking 63.75% of votes in the province, according to results released by the IEC by 9am today.

The party got 677 483 votes to the Democratic Alliance’s 237 315 (22.27%).

In the province with 572 140 registered voters, 363 361 (63.5%) made their mark in South Africa’s fourth post-democracy local government elections on Wednesday.

The Congress of the People took 126 897 votes (11.92%), while independent candidates obtained 5332 votes (0.5%).

Just over a million votes were cast in the province for ward councillors and proportional representation. There were 21 479 spoilt votes.
