ANCYL concerned about pupil safety

2010-11-11 10:45

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) is outraged by the lack of safety for pupils after a number of recent incidents at schools, the Gauteng ANCYL said today.

“The common disturbing thing about these incidents is the apparent excessive use of alcohol by pupils. We reiterate our call for stringent measures to be applied for the sale of alcohol,” said ANCYL provincial secretary Ayanda Kasa-Ntsobi in a statement.

The statement follows the most recent case where a 15-year old girl alleged she was raped by three boys at a school in Jeppestown in Johannesburg.

“We call on parents, community and faith-based organisations, and school governing bodies to stand up and act against these disturbing incidents.

“It is our responsibility as communities to ensure that we monitor the behaviour of our children and apply immediate corrective measures when they err.”

Kasa-Ntsobi said that school principals and teachers “have a responsibility... to restore safety in schools”.

They must remember that they assume the responsibility of parenting the moment pupils enter school premises, she said.
