The ANC’s mistakes were far exceeded by the good it had achieved during the past 20 years in government, the party’s deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said.

Speaking in Durban yesterday, Ramaphosa said: “Mistakes have been made, but at the same time we have had great success.”

He said the party’s record meant its membership had grown to 1.2 million people.

“We have a good story to tell,” he told a meeting in Durban’s southern Amanzimtoti suburb to welcome new ANC members.

He said the government was investing in the country’s economy and urged the private sector to do the same.

“The private sector plays a critical role.”

The failure of public sector institutions such as Eskom to invest in the economy during the first years of ANC rule had hampered growth, but these institutions were now investing.

The government was aiming to ensure that 70% of what it would procure was locally produced, said Ramaphosa.
