ANC’s like a husband who must stay charming – Gigaba

2014-04-06 10:00

The ANC will continue to campaign after the elections, just like a husband has to keep on charming his wife after marriage, ANC elections head Malusi Gigaba has said.

Gigaba told City Press in an interview that the party’s elections machinery – on the 11th floor of its Luthuli House headquarters – will be a permanent structure that continues to operate even after elections.

This is the first time this will happen.

Gigaba said it is because elections are a permanent feature in a democracy.

“You can’t reinvent the wheel each time there is an election coming.

“There is a joke about a woman who said to her husband, after we got married you no longer buy me flowers and sexy lingerie. And the husband says to her, have you ever seen the ANC campaigning after an election?” said Gigaba.

He was caught out seven years ago when he bought his wife flowers at the expense of the home affairs department, where he was deputy minister.

“Part of our problem has been precisely that we campaign about 12 months before an election, and the messages of the opposition about you have sunk in.”

Apart from the increase in the size of the elections’ machinery and its permanence, Gigaba said they have also added dedicated social network teams that accompany officials and NEC members to disseminate their messages on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Mixit during campaigns.

Technology like Mixit is aimed at young, new voters who are about 19 years old as they may not be using other platforms like older voters,” said Gigaba.

“Social networks are important to break the news so that we don’t wait for conventional media,” he said.
