Academy honours May Mahlangu

Stars of Africa Football Academy top export May Mahlangu was last night honoured for his remarkable achievements in Sweden in the just-ended season.

He was the guest of honour at the youth development institution’s year-end awards ceremony at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, last night.

The 22-year-old from Embalenhle in Mpumalanga won a treble with Swedish Premiership club Helsingborg IF last season.

The talented midfielder capped his impressive full season with the Swedish Player of the Year accolade, in a campaign in which he only missed two games out of 30 league outings.

“It’s a great feeling that words can’t explain,” he said.

“I missed being away from the family. This is how the environment is at Stars of Africa. We are a big family regardless of our different cultural and traditional background.

“I know the young boys at the academy look up to me and I’m humbled by their warm reception and the special award they gave me.”

Mahlangu was awarded the chairman’s award by the institution’s founder, Farouk Khan.

“Farouk is more than just a development coach, he is a father figure, a mentor and just everything a son would expect from his loving father.”

Mahlangu is on a month-long holiday and his will rejoin his club mates for a preseason training camp on January 2.

Khan said they hope to nurture more players to follow on the footsteps of Mahlangu.

“These boys dream big and with the right technical and scientific support they can go far.”

In just eight years since it was established, Stars of Africa’s empire has expanded outside Gauteng with the launch this year of a branch in Cape Town.
