Accused laughed when discussing murder plot – court told

2011-07-27 14:02

The plot thickens.

These were the words of advocate Johann Nel, representative of husband and wife Caroline and James Mokgothu who are accused of the murder of former Naledi mayor Motlatsi Motloi.

Nel made this comment after state witness Sabata Potele testified in the Bloemfontein High Court today.

Potele testified that Caroline Mokgothu, one of the accused and a former manager at the Naledi municipality, was laughing the first time – in November 2009 – she talked about killing the mayor (Motloi).

He said although she had laughed, it came across as if she was not joking.

Potele said they at first discussed using muti against Motloi, because Caroline believed the mayor (Motloi) was using witchcraft against her.

He said Caroline told him there was a break-in at her office and they found muti.

She suspected Motloi of planting the bad muti there.Potele testified Motloi had called a meeting with volunteers working for the municipality to tell them Caroline had embezzled R1.2 million.

During the meeting at Caroline’s house it was Khaka who said that Motloi should be killed, because the muti would take too long.

Potele said he believed Caroline was happy with Khaka’s proposal.

He said since she had also mentioned killing the mayor before, he got the impression she was just waiting for someone to make such a suggestion.

Potele said after Khaka’s proposal, killing Motloi was “head on the agenda”.

He said it was also agreed that he – a former employee of the municipality who was unemployed after being dismissed – would do a catering job for the municipality in order to pay for the murder.

Potele said although he was not on the database of the municipality Caroline said he should make a written submission and that she would recommend him.

He testified that convicted assassin Senowe Khaka, who is currently serving 21 years in jail for killing Motloi, also had a gripe with Motloi.

Potele said although Khaka did not mention this at a meeting where the plot to murder Motloi was discussed he knew that Motloi owed his assassin R5 000 for a job he did for him in Bloemfontein.

Motloi was shot dead on May 3 last year in front of his house in Wepener, Free State.

According to Khaka, Potele had recruited him to kill Motloi and introduced him to Caroline.

Potele turned state witness and is currently in protective custody.

He has admitted to being the initial link between the Mokgothus and Khaka.

The trial continues.
