Ace keeps his place

2012-06-23 08:56

Free State ANC chairperson Ace Magashule has been re-elected.

The nomination process for the top five positions started late last night after the conference was delayed for several hours.

Magashule assured delegates during the opening of the conference in Parys yesterday, when he presented the provincial political report, that the ANC in the Free State was united. He said it was only a few members in the party who “lose positions of power and then realise that the ANC is divided”.

Magashule was referring to former MEC Mxolisi Dukwana, whom he sacked during a cabinet reshuffle earlier this year. Dukwana, who was until yesterday the provincial treasurer, indicated he was going to contest Magashule.

However, he did not attend the conference. Dukwana was backed by a faction that called themselves the Regime Change Group. During the election last night Dukwana was replaced by Mosebenzi Zwane.

Sibongile Besani, the provincial secretary, who was seen as supporting the Regime Change Group in the run-up to the provincial conference, has been replaced by William Bulwane.

Deputy chairperson Thabo Manyoni, executive mayor of the Mangaung Metro, and deputy secretary Mamiki Qabathe were also re-elected.
