Hollywood funnyman Adam Sandler and his family tucked into hamburgers in Cape Town during a break from shooting his latest film, a romantic comedy called Blended.

Patrons at Hudson’s Burger Joint on trendy Kloof Street gawked when Sandler, his brunette wife, Jackie, and their young daughters, Sadie and Sunny, sat down to lunch this Saturday. Sandler ordered a custom hamburger consisting of only a meat pattie and cheese – with no bread roll.

“People went crazy,” said the restaurant’s general manager, Andrew East. “Adam was friendly and stood up to shake people’s hands. Some of his companions were protective and asked patrons to respect his privacy.”

The actor’s party consisted of 13 people, who sat at two tables.

“I thought they would be difficult, but not at all,” said East.

Hudson’s appears to be a celebrity favourite in Cape Town, with recent prominent patrons including the actors Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, and crooner James Blunt.

East said: “I think they dig it here because we don’t make a fuss. I just treat them like any other customer.”

Sandler (46) and actress Drew Barrymore (38) – who famously collaborated in The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates – are in South Africa to film their much-anticipated silver screen reunion, Blended.

The pair portray single parents who end up stuck at a family resort with their children from previous marriages after a lousy first date. Teen star Bella Thorne, best known for her role as CeCe Jones in Disney Channel’s Shake it Up, plays Barrymore’s daughter.

Filming was mostly done at the Sun City Resort over the past two months, with locations including the resort’s animal park and the Palace of the Lost City.

Barrymore also visited Cape Town during a break from filming. The actress unrolled her yoga mat next to 25 others at the popular Hot Dog Yoga Studio in Sea Point. She did a 90 minute hot yoga class.

Manager Alison Sterne said: “Drew was very, very nice. Exactly as one would imagine her to be.”
