Salt proves that anything an action hero can do Angelina Jolie can do better and sexier.

Film: Salt (Ster Kinekor)
Director: Phillip Noyce
Featuring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor
Rating: 7/10

This film is a rapid-fire, way over-the-top spy thriller about a CIA agent, Evelyn Salt, who is accused of being a mole.

Jolie is no stranger to strapping on a pistol and flick-flacking her way through a maze of gunfire and highly trained SWAT cops – and this experience stands her in good stead.

Possibly the hottest woman on the planet, she is also a versatile Oscar-winning actress who really can do anything and doesn’t need an A-list man to sell her film.

This one raked in serious box-office cash overseas, but then with a budget of $110 million (R770 million) it needed to.

Salt is directed by Phillip Noyce.

Latterly the Australian director has made cerebral, social commentary films such as Catch a Fire, The Quiet American and Rabbit-Proof Fence.

But if you cast your mind back you will remember he was the puppetmaster of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, the Tom Clancy-based spy thrillers with Harrison Ford in the early 1990s.

This experience is visible in this big-budget, whizz-bang blockbuster.

Writer Kurt Wimmer shows his pedigree with this thriller.

He previously wrote the Milla Jovovich vehicle Ultraviolet (his mistake was directing it too), as well as Law Abiding Citizen with Gerard Butler.

Salt is his best work. The cast is rounded out by a pair of independent film actors – Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Schreiber is Salt’s partner who can’t believe she could be working for the other side, Ejiofor is the internal-affairs agent sent to put Salt on ice until the story can be unravelled. Both add extra weight to an already well-armed action thriller.

Salt, after the credits roll, could have been just another spy thriller, but the calibre of the filmmakers ratches it up a notch, as does Jolie.

Although Evelyn Salt does 10 impossible things before breakfast and then really gets going, the audience happily suspends their disbelief to take an adrenaline-pumped trip with her.

You will feel as though you’ve been on every ride at the funfair at the same time after this – oh, and Salt makes James Bond look like a pansy.
