Advocate stable after attack

Prominent Advocate Jaap Cilliers is in a stable condition after being injected with an unknown substance outside court in Pretoria.

Cilliers was admitted into the Mediclinic Pretoria Heart Hospital yesterday, The Star reported today.

He was apparently injected with an unknown substance outside the High Court in Pretoria after concluding a civil case on Wednesday.

The multimillion rand civil case continued without him. Judge Legodi Phatudi, who is presiding over the case, visited Cilliers late on Wednesday afternoon.

Cilliers’s colleague and friend Tokkie van Zyl, said he knew little about what had happened.

“I spoke to Jaap this morning (Thursday) and it was going okay with him. I do not really know what happened, other than that he was injected in the buttocks with a substance in the street after he left the court on Wednesday afternoon. I did not want to ask him too many questions,” he told The Star.

Some of Cilliers’ clients have included Dr Wouter Basson, Jackie Selebi and the Waterkloof four.

Warrant Officer Ann Poortman, of the Pretoria Police Station, said yesterday that she did not have much detail about the attack because no formal complaint had been made.

“No case was reported to us. We understand he (Cilliers) is in hospital. Maybe the report will be done at some (later) stage,” said Poortman.

“For the police to investigate, a report has to be laid first,” she said.
