Africans on the rich list

There are many wealth lists, but the Forbes List is one of the oldest and most reliable. This year Forbes listed a record 1?645 billionaires.

There were 29 Africans, up from 20 in 2013, with Nigeria placed 13 places ahead of South Africa with 11, three less than in 2013.

At the top, for the fourth year in a row, was Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian industrialist with a fortune of $21.6?billion (R252?billion).

Second in Africa, and the first South African, was luxury goods patriarch Johann Rupert with $7.6?billion, followed by diamonds-funded Nicky Oppenheimer and family with $6.7?billion.

At number seven is Mr Shoprite Christo Wiese, with $3.2?billion, and eighth is Natie Kirsch, the Swaziland-based property mogul with $3.1?billion.

In 12th place is Patrice Motsepe, described as South Africa’s first and only black dollar billionaire, who is said to have a fortune of $2.7?billion.

Stephen Saad of Aspen, Koos Bekker, the globetrotting former CEO of Naspers, City Press’ parent company, and fund manager Allan Gray all make the list with $1.3?billion.

With the minimum net worth to be included onthe overall list increasing to $510?million from $400?million last year, several

South Africans dropped out, including deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, Pick n Pay’s Raymond Ackerman and Adrian Gore of Discovery.
