Africa’s brightest young minds

2011-09-03 16:30

A young man from Limpopo has been named one of the eight most promising young entrepreneurs in Africa.

Ludwick Marishane (21) and his company, Headboy Industries, created DryBath, a “bathsubstituting” lotion which he hopes will save lives across the parts of the continent that are affected by diseases caused by poor hygiene and sanitation. His idea was spawned by a school friend who was too lazy to take a bath.

Now Marishane is South Africa’s youngest patent holder.

His product means people, especially those without access to clean water, can use the lotion instead.

Marishane and seven others were selected from 178 entrepreneurs from 20 African countries for this year’s Anzisha Prize and a stake in the almost R500 000 total prize money.

Joel Mwale (18) from Kenya won the first prize of more than R210 000. The first runner-up prize of R140 313 went to George Bakka from Uganda, and Antoinette Furaha from Uganda was awarded the R70 000 third prize.

The Anzisha Prize is an initiative of the Africa Leadership Academy and The MasterCard Foundation.
