Aged sports star cuts a deal to avoid jail for underage sex

2011-01-14 07:19

New York – Former National Football League (NFL) star Lawrence

Taylor pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and patronising a prostitute,

misdemeanour charges that will see him register as a sex offender but won’t put

him behind bars.

The 51-year-old former linebacker, part of the New York Giants’

Super Bowl winning teams of 1987 and 1991, will serve six years’

probation.

“She told me she was 19,” Taylor said in court yesterday as he

admitted having sex with a prostitute who turned out to be a 16-year-old runaway

from the New York City borough of the Bronx.

Taylor said he now understood the girl was legally incapable of

consent.

Prosecutor Patricia Gunning said the plea deal was worked out after

Taylor assisted authorities in investigations into human trafficking in the wake

of the charges.

Taylor’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, said that taking a plea deal was in

everyone’s best interest.

“He could have taken a much more aggressive road, but he decided it

was in the best interest of his family and the young woman to put this behind

him,” Aidala said, adding that he was “cautiously optimistic” that he would have

won the case had it gone to trial.

Taylor was arrested in May at a suburban hotel.

Authorities said the Hall of Famer paid the teenage girl $300 (R2

050).

In July, Taylor pleaded not guilty to third-degree rape,

patronising a prostitute, sexual abuse and endangering a child.

Prosecutors said in December he had been offered a six-month jail

term and 10 years’ probation in exchange for pleading guilty to a felony, a deal

Taylor refused.

Taylor was one of the top defensive players in the NFL.
