Ajax Cape Town wins Premier Cup

2013-04-02 09:00

Ajax Cape Town has been crowned champions of the 2013 Metropolitan Under19 Premier Cup staged in Belhar outside Cape Town.

This after they defeated Berea Albion 5-4 on penalties yesterday as fulltime play ended in a two-all stalemate.

Albion’s Bassa Tano oi Tano’s penalty kick hit the upright, all thanks to Brandon Peterson’s slight touch to the ball.

The victory puts Ajax as joint record holders with Hellenic as they are the only teams to have won the Cup six times in the 25 years the tournament has been in existence.

The Urban Warrior’s juniors took an early lead, 30 minutes into the first half, after a one-two interplay between Rivaldo Coetzee and Haashim Domingo connected with Tashreeq Morris’ right foot who put the ball in the back of the net.

Albion’s equaliser towards the end of the first half came courtesy of substitute Taahir Ganga to level matters one each at the half-time break.

Whatever Kwemo had said to his boys in the change room seemed to have worked following miscommunication between Ajax’s last man and defender Justin Jacobus which gifted the Gauteng side with a goal on a silver platter via star player Sege Gado.

The hard work and determination displayed by the young men from Ikamva from the start of the tournament was rewarded with a comeback equaliser with a well-timed cross from Simphiwe Mnqandu that was driven to the net by Riaad Norodien.

The coach of the winning team was deservedly named coach of the tournament, with Abubaker Mobara walking away with player of the tournament award.
