Album of the week – The Muffinz

Rating: 8/10

This week I heard The Muffinz for the first time and it was the perfect setting to sell this band to me.

On Wednesday night, Katzy’s in Rosebank was jam-packed with screaming fans ready to be a part of the band’s epic album launch.

Listening to this five-piece all-guy band, it’s easy to imagine that they grew up on nothing but soul and that the day they picked up their bass guitars magic was born.

Their clean, smooth vocals make the album a breeze to listen to, while the lyrical content makes this more than just a foot-tapping CD.

Have You Heard? is their sing-along crowd pleaser, while the vocals on S’cela Kuwe capture the deeply spiritual nature of music and prayer. Umsebenzi Wendoda will forever be memorable after drummer and lead vocalist Gregory Mabusela sheds a tear for his late mother, whom the song was written for.

With band culture making a strong comeback, it’s inspiring to see a new, young and fresh band that can hold down a full two hours with the audience singing along to every song, and to later hear a professionally recorded final product. The Muffinz are delectable.
