Alcohol suckers sold to children

Ice suckers that had been doctored with mampoer for a Loftus Versveld rugby match accidentally got muddled up with normal ice suckers and were sold to children at a shop in Pretoria.

At least one primary school pupil unsuspectingly bought these suckers this week.

Jan Smith (56), from Sinoville in Pretoria, has been making the suckers from his home for more than 10 years and supplies them to shops and schools.

He said yesterday that he was shocked to hear of the mistake.

“I feel terrible about this. Friends of mine recently asked me ahead of one of the Bulls’ Super Rugby games to doctor a couple of suckers with mampoer for them for the match,” said Smith.

“Some of these suckers must have gotten mixed up with my normal suckers,” said Smith.

“I have been making suckers for years and I have a good product that I’m proud of. I don’t waste time with dirty tricks.”

Annemarie Meyer (33) said her 12-year-old son came to tell her that the sucker he had bought had booze in it.

“He told me: ‘Mom, there is rum in this sucker’. I then sent my children to buy a sucker in each flavour and there was definitely liquor in some,” he said.

Meyer approached the Wonderboompoort police station.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier confirmed that police officers bought suckers from the café and sent them away for forensic tests.

Meanwhile, Smith yesterday went to fetch the remaining suckers from the corner café after realising his mistake, and personally apologised to Meyer and the store manager.

“I promised the café manager extra bags of suckers to make up for any losses,” he said.

Oliver said yesterday afternoon that since Meyer had accepted Smith’s apology, police would not act against him.
