Alex court appearance for rearrested Rolex gang

2011-07-05 10:57

Three men arrested in connection with a spate of housebreakings and jewellery robberies around Sandton, in Johannesburg, were expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court today, police said.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said these were the same three men who were freed by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court yesterday because police had failed to bring them to court within 48 hours.

Moments after the ruling, they were surrounded by six heavily-armed police officers and rearrested on another charge.

“The men were rearrested at court yesterday for robbing a woman of a Rolex watch and diamond earrings in Sandton last week,” Dlamini said.

Bafana Mthembu, Moses Maleka and Benson Mbatha, were first arrested on Wednesday after their Mercedes-Benz was stopped in Sandton.

They were allegedly found with four pistols, he said.

Police were led to several houses in Sandton, Bramley and Alexandra where they recovered suspected stolen goods valued at more than R2.5 million.

These included plasma screen televisions, diamond rings, designer sunglasses, and watches including Rolex watches.

The Mercedes-Benz, which was believed to have been stolen, was linked to several serious and violent crimes, Dlamini said.

It was seized along with a Volkswagen Golf and five unlicensed firearms.
