All a celeb wants for Christmas...

2010-12-19 09:30

Sleep, anonymity and “something made with love”.

If the wish lists of South African celebrities are anything to go by, this Christmas is not going to be the season of bling and gadgets.

Says poet and new mother Lebo Mashile: “I have a newborn baby, so all I want for Christmas is sleep.”

Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP) wishes for an all-expenses-paid holiday to “where nobody knows me – maybe in the islands. I would love to be an ordinary person for just one week,” he says.

Trend analyst Dion Chang would prefer a handmade gift.

“It’s made out of love. That’s so much more personal,” he says.

Businesswoman Carol Bouwer prefers relaxing time with her family and – like Mashile – some sleep.

“I work so much throughout the year that I hardly have time to sleep properly. So time with family, time to relax, spa treatments – that’s all I want.”

When it comes to gadgets, Chang and Bouwer mention the iPad. Chang would like one for himself and Bouwer bought one for her son.

“He is a gadget freak, so it was ideal,” says Bouwer.

Idols winner Elvis Blue wants what he always gets from his wife: a surfboard.

“Gadgets? I have too many of those. I do not want any,” he says.

Actress Pam Andrews would love a pill that allows her to eat everything she wants all festive season – “then in January I pop the pill and it brings back my original weight, immediately”.

The Rhythm City star adds: “I want a diamond bracelet. It would go nicely with the diamond earrings my husband bought for me.”

Former Miss South Africa Jo-Ann Strauss’s must-have Christmas gift is a digital camera.

She says the one she has is nearing the end of its days and she is “a very enthusiastic picture snapper”.

Businesswoman, socialite and events organiser Edith Venter says if it were possible to box and wrap it, “good business for next year” is what she would love.

But for “something buy-able I would love to get a tennis bracelet. The one I had was stolen during a hijacking and I never replaced it,” she says.

Gems are also on the list of jewellery designer Jenna Clifford, who wants “a whole bag of love and a trinket necklace”.

Clifford says she will make new jewellery for her daughters, and for her friends she will make homeware.

What do celebs NOT want?

For Chang it’s Abba’s Greatest Hits CD.

Says Clifford: “The worst gift I have ever received is one given without consciousness. It’s not the price that matters, it is the consciousness of the gift that matters. It must be given with love.”
