Alleged hijacker nabbed in ceiling

2011-11-02 07:30

A hijacking suspect, who police found hiding in the ceiling of a house in the Johannesburg suburb of Highlands North, would appear in court tomorrow, Gauteng police said.

The 19-year-old, who was arrested yesterday, was expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court, said the police’s Tshisikhawe Ndou.

At about 3.30pm yesterday, a woman was hijacked by armed men at the intersection of Louis Botha Avenue and Sixth Avenue in the Highlands North area, he said.

“A quick reaction by police made the suspects abandon the car and they ran between the residential houses,” Ndou said, adding that high-speed vehicles of the police flying squad and a helicopter also responded.

“At one of the houses, we realised that one of the suspects could not have got past without being seen ... Police searched and found him hiding in the ceiling.”

He said witness accounts varied as to whether there were two or three men involved in the hijacking.

Police would continue searching for suspects.
