Alliance with workers, communists a tradition – Zuma

2011-01-08 07:28

President Jacob Zuma said those predicting the demise of the ruling ANC’s alliance with Cosatu and the SA Communist Party were mistaken.

Addressing a gala dinner of the Progressive Business Forum in Polokwane ahead of the ANC’s 99th anniversary celebrations today, Zuma said the party’s association with working movements and communists was nothing new.

“The alliance between the ANC, workers and the Communist Party has been the subject of analysis and debate over many years.

“This organisation has never shied away from the workers.

If you see us being in alliance with Cosatu, it is not something we decided recently. It is an old tradition.”

He said that long before the establishment of Cosatu, a former ANC leader, Josiah Gumede, had spoken about the ANC’s support for workers in 1927 at a conference on imperialism in Brussels.

“Some who may not appreciate this will certainly write obituaries about the alliance,” he said.

Zuma will deliver his annual January 8 statement today.

Celebrations will be held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
