Amateurs FC Buffalo confident of knocking Kaizer Chiefs out of Nedbank Cup

2014-02-27 15:05

Defending Nedbank Cup champions Kaizer Chiefs were handed a tricky fixture during the last 16 draw today.

The draw pitted Amakhosi against second division outfit FC Buffalo.

The East London-based side are the only remaining side from the Safa lower league that has made it to the second round of the lucrative competition.

According to the amateur side’s midfielder Phehello Pitso, the draw against a fancied opponent like Chiefs was what they had wished for.

“Chiefs always attract smaller teams in this competition and playing against them will motivate us considering that our team is mainly made of young players,” said Pitso whose side is also chasing promotion to the National First Division (NFD).

“We expect the Chiefs coach to field fringe players but this will be of their own undoing to undermine us. We won’t need any motivation against Chiefs and we’ll have a surprise up our sleeve.”

Amakhosi fell prey to minnows before in the same competition with Baroka FC (in 2011), FC Cape Town (in 2008) and University of Pretoria (in 2009) having all claimed wins in the recent seasons.

Buffalo beat NFD campaigners FC Cape Town in the opening round.

Other powerhouses such as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were not spared easy draws either as the two will face coastal opposition.

Pirates will play Santos in Cape Town while Sundowns will meet Golden Arrows in Durban.

Another interesting battle will be that of former Nedbank Cup champions Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United.

Cup kings Platinum Stars also fancy their chances of annexing a third knockout competition trophy against Maritzburg United, to add to their MTN8 and Telkom Knockout trophies.

Dikwena captain Vuyo Mere said: “We wish to campaign in the CAF tournament and this is one chance to do it.”

Nedbank champions are guaranteed a berth in the CAF Confederation Cup and in the event the winning team are also the league champions, the runners-up get elevated to the continental competition.

The PSL will confirm the venues and the dates of the last 16 in due course.
