Amplats: 13 injured in union ‘attack’

2013-02-18 17:09

Thirteen people have been injured after Anglo American Platinum security guards opened fire on a group of about 1 000 mineworkers in Rustenburg.

Among the injured are four mine security guards, North West police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane told City Press.

Ngubane said the incident occurred when four National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop stewards returned to work today after a period of suspension.

Their return apparently angered members of the rival Association for Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), who then mobilised the group and attacked the NUM office.

“The injured have been admitted to the Bleskop hospital,” Ngubane said.

He said police were monitoring the situation.

Amplats spokesperson Mpumi Sithole was not immediately available for comment.
