Anglican calls for woman bishops

2010-10-01 14:44

The Anglican Church in Southern Africa has called for more support in its own ranks for the appointment of female priests and bishops.

The church said today that this was one of the resolutions approved this week at its provincial synod in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

The synod agreed in 1992 to the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate.

However, the resolution, proposed by Bishop Oswald Swartz of Kimberley and Kuruman, said some dioceses still did not ordain women as priests and no woman had yet been made a bishop.

The synod resolved to urge “every diocese to take all appropriate steps to promote the eligibility of women for episcopal office”.
