Another NFP member shot dead

A third National Freedom Party (NFP) official has been shot dead in KwaZulu-Natal this week, the transport, community safety and liaison department said.

Mfaniseni Mtshali (45), who was the KwaMashu Hostel NFP branch leader, was found dead there last night, said MEC Willies Mchunu.

He had been shot several times. Ten 9mm pistol cartridges were found at the scene.

On Sunday, senior NFP member and traditional headman Thintabantu Mthembu and eThekwini Municipality NFP leader Gundu Makhanya were shot dead.
Mthembu was shot in KwaNgenetsheni near Vryheid, and Makhanya outside his home in Chatsworth, Durban.

The attacks came after talk of violence by leaders of another political party, said NFP spokeswoman Zanele Cele.

“According to information we received from some intelligence sources, Mthembu was on top of a circulating hitlist which has names of top NFP leaders in the Zululand District.”

Mchunu condemned the killings as senseless and said they had to be stopped.

“It is very disturbing, when one has to hear such brutality after all the preaching we as the government have done,” he said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the police’s political violence task team was investigating Mtshali’s death.
