Another draw in Bafana group

2013-01-19 23:30

Goal drought continued on the Africa Cup of Nations opening day as Angola and Morocco yielded another 0-0 draw in Group A.

The result is an ideal outcome for every side in the group, particularly hosts South Africa who were held by the same margin by debutants Cape Verde in the opening match.

Angola had more defending to do in the opening half as they had to repel Morocco attacks that resulted in raids against goalkeeper Joao Lama.

Mounir El Hamdaoui posted two shots at goal in the opening 10 minutes.

At the opposite end, Angola's star player and captain Manucho's misery started when he failed to control the ball on two occasions in the opening stanza.

The Spanish-based striker also missed an appetising chance towards the end. But it was his striking partner Afonso Guilherme who came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes after the break.

This was followed a few moments later by Mateus da Costa's effort that was nearly deflected in by Morocco defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari.

Da Costa is one player Bafana's midfield should shut down when they meet in Durban on Wednesday.

The Number 17 is elusive on the right wing and his passes split the Moroccan's defence each time the Black Antelopes leaped forward.

Morocco will face Cape Verde in Durban on Wednesday.
