‘Apartheid-style’ shooting of motorist condemned

2010-07-13 10:30

The Young Communist League today condemned the killing of a motorist who was allegedly shot dead by four policemen in Pretoria central.

YCL spokesperson Gugu Ndima said: “Such apartheid-style brutality does not belong in the era of democracy.

"We cannot accept such barbarism to continue when we claim to be a democratic society.”

Nkosinathi Ntuli, 23, of Doornpoort was driving his Toyota RunX, allegedly on the wrong side of Boom Street, near the corner of Cowie Street yesterday, when he was shot dead.

The Independent Complaints Directorate said the officers – a captain, two sergeants and a warrant officer – were arrested because nothing on the scene indicated their lives had been in danger and that shooting was warranted.

They were in an unmarked vehicle and the driver was not in police uniform. The other three officers were in uniform.

Ndima said nothing could justify the allegedly “hasty” manner in which police reacted.

“There have been several cases where people have lost their lives to men in blue who are supposed to be protectors of our community.”

Ndima sent her organisation’s condolences to the Ntuli family and to the ANC Youth League’s Montana banch, of which Ntuli was a member.

“We have lost potential and talent in such a young man who evidently had a bright future in his field.”

The four officers were expected to appear in court today.
