App of the week: BBM for iOS and Android

2013-11-17 14:00

There were 20 million downloads of BBM for Android and iOS in the first week of it being available, showing how many people still want to use it.

It is not clear how many of these are former BlackBerry users or people who want to stay in touch with those still on BlackBerry.

BBM on a touch screen smartphone looks very similar to that on a BlackBerry, including the Z10 and Z30, which are also touch screen devices.

If you already have a BlackBerry ID (which is usually an email address), all you need to do is sign in and your contacts will still be there.

Then it’s much the same as BBM always was, just without the qwerty keyboard.

Messages show when they are delivered and read, and you can send images and videos while updating your profile

with new pictures and emoticons. Just like WhatsApp or WeChat.

These cross-platform messaging apps have been letting people send messages between different operating systems longer, but BBM is useful for staying in touch with friends who haven’t yet switched from BlackBerry or BBM.
