The area around the Egoli Gas premises in Cottesloe, Joburg, has been declared safe after a bomb scare this morning.

Roads were closed off and traffic was diverted. Staff working in the area, which is adjacent to Auckland Park, and students were seen milling around.

According to Joburg police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the area was closed off at 9am and was reopened at 11am.

He would, however, not confirm reports of a bomb scare.

A security guard working near the AFDA Film, TV and Performance School said it had been asked to evacuate people from the surrounding buildings.

He said police had told him of the possibility that there was a bomb at Egoli Gas.

A man driving out of one of the businesses in the area said he was also told the police had found a bomb at Egoli Gas. He said he had asked all his staff to leave the premises.

Authorities would not comment on why the area had been closed off to traffic and pedestrians.

Even though the students had been evacuated from the AFDA building, many were sitting on the pavement, watching the police activity. They didn’t seem to be worried.

Near the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Road campus, there were a number of police cars – some parked and some were patrolling the area.

Police were yet to confirm why the area had been closed off.
