Arts and culture department searching for DG

2010-12-17 07:14

The national arts and culture department is looking for a director-general following the departure of Themba Wakashe.

The vacant position was advertised last weekend following Wakashe’s departure in September after three years as director-general.

Chief operations officer Veliswa Baduza has been appointed acting director-general.

Wakashe (50) is a former manager of pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.

He became the department’s second director-general when he was appointed in October 2007, replacing Prof Itumeleng Mosala.

Mosala is now vice-president of the local division of US nuclear technology firm Westinghouse Electric Company.

Wakashe was also the department’s deputy director-general between 2000 and 2007 as well as a chief director from 1996 to 2000.

The closing date for the R1.2 million-a-year position is January 14.

The department is also looking for two deputy directors-general and a chief financial officer.

Wakashe leaves while the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is probing departmental officials who allegedly misappropriated part of the R1.5 billion allocated for projects in the past four years.

President Jacob Zuma authorised the SIU probe, which will focus on the period between April 2006 and June this year.

The unit will investigate irregular and fruitless expenditure, improper or unlawful conduct by officials, and any offences committed under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
