Assaulted pupil ‘doing better’

2011-09-30 11:33

A matric pupil assaulted at a high school in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, last week, was “doing much better” after surgery today, Tygerburg Hospital said.

“He is in a stable condition and is doing much better,” said spokesperson Laticia Pienaar.

Yesterday, the learner was operated on for injuries he received in the assault. Pienaar could not divulge the nature of his injuries.

Volunteer security guards allegedly assaulted him at his school in front of the principal last week.

The Western Cape education department would conduct “a full investigation” into “the actions of all concerned”, said spokesperson Paddy Attwell.

He said the principal had denied ordering the attack, and said he intervened to stop the assault.

“The department has noted his comments and those of his accusers, and will apply due process rigorously depending on the outcome of the investigation,” Attwell said.

The Western Cape public community safety department said it would also investigate the matter.
