At least 75 Morsi supporters killed in Cairo clashes – medics

Cairo – At least 75 supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi were killed in clashes with police in Cairo today, doctors at an Islamist-organised field hospital said.

Another 1 000 people were wounded in the violence on the road to Cairo airport, said the medics at the hospital set up by Morsi’s supporters at their protest camp in the nearby Nasr City district.

At least 37 bodies were laid out at an Islamist-run field hospital after the deadly clashes, an AFP correspondent reported.

All of the dead were killed by live rounds during the clashes, medics told the correspondent at the makeshift hospital near the Egyptian capital’s Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, where Morsi supporters have been camped since the military ousted him on July 3.

The official Mena news agency put the toll at 20 dead and 177 wounded, citing Dr Khaled al-Khatib, the director of emergency services at the health ministry.

The AFP correspondent at the field hospital said at least four of those killed had gunshot wounds to their heads.

The bodies, which were spread out on the bloody floor of a bathroom, were covered with white sheets, on which their names were written.

Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood said police had fired live rounds when running battles broke out at dawn on the road through the Cairo district of Nasr City, where the mosque is located, to the international airport.

Mena cited a senior security official as saying that only tear gas was used to disperse the demonstrators.

Eight policemen suffered injuries caused by stones that were thrown at them and buckshot, the official said.
