Athletes expected to prove themselves

Young athletes will get a chance to prove their worth without having to watch over their shoulder during the Yellow Pages interprovincial meeting on Saturday.

Middle-distance runner and 800m world champion Caster Semenya and South Africa’s 400m hurdles record-holder LJ van Zyl won’t be part of this meeting.

South African track and field teams return to action this weekend at the event to be held at Germiston Stadium in Ekurhuleni.

Defending champions Gauteng North head into the season with expectations for success.

The Gauteng North team is built around a core of veterans along with an emerging group of younger performers.

Athletics Gauteng North operational officer Danie Cornelius said they would be looking to find ways to fill the void left by Semenya and Van Zyl.

“I look forward to seeing how our youngsters respond. This is one of the best competitions in the country, so our athletes will be challenged,” said Cornelius.

Experienced athletes on the women’s side include Carina Horn, Isabelle le Roux and Cherese Jones.

Athletes are awarded points per performance based on the IAAF (athletics motherbody) points table.
