Athletes honoured at regional awards

South African marathon queen Rene Kalmer and Xolisa Tyali were awarded the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Athlete of the Year awards in Sandton, northern Joburg, last night.

Former South African 800m champion Mapaseka Makhanya and Tshamano Setone walked away with the Most Promising Athlete award in the senior female and male categories respectively.

Renown marathon legend Hendrick Ramaala was also recognised for his contribution in the sport and got the Presidential Lifetime award.

Ramaala, who now serves on the Athletics SA board, was jointly acknowledged with Vreni Welch.

CGA also last night acknowledged its contingent of athletes who represented the country in international events this year.

Steeplechaser Ruben Ramolefi, Kalmer and sprinter Lebogang Moeng did duty at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Meanwhile, the junior awards went toEdwin Sesipi and Thato Makhafola (both Athlete of the Year), while Sylvia Tshetlanyane and Donovan Steebing were each awarded as the most promising.

ASA vice-president Motlatsi Keikabile, who was the guest of honour, praised CGA for a job well done.

Other award recipients on the night were Pierre Bliegnot (Coach of the Year) and Dumisani Mazibuko (Technical Official of the Year.
