Athletics stars get set for Stockholm Diamond League

2014-08-21 10:48

Newly crowned African champions Khotso Mokoena, Cornel Fredericks and Zarck Visser make up a small South African contingent that will line up in the Diamond League leg of Stockholm, Sweden, tonight.

The trio – who are Glasgow Commonwealth Games and African champs in their respective events – will line up at the DH Galan track and field meeting this evening.

Eight strong African champions will compete in Stockholm. The list includes Botswana’s 800m star Nigel Amos, who is based in South Africa.

Europe has 10 newly crowned champions from their Championships.

Mokoena and Visser are yet to register points in the long jump in the lucrative one-day meetings, and there are only two competitions left.

Rising star Ruswahl Samaai, who opted not to enter tonight’s meeting, has registered a point.

Fredericks is nine points adrift of 400m hurdles Diamond leader Javier Culson of Puerto Rico on 13 points.

The winner of each Diamond race is guaranteed $10?000 (about R100?000).

Meanwhile, the South Africans’ participation in tonight’s Diamond League follows just a few hours after the Confederation of African Athletics named Mokoena, Fredericks and Visser in Team Africa for the IAAF Continental Cup that takes place in Marrakech, Morocco, next month.

They will represent the continent by virtue of being the African champions. South Africa contributed 12 track and field athletes to the team.
