Baby All Blacks player accused of rape

A New Zealand Under-20 rugby player has been accused of raping a woman at a hotel in Cape Town.

Colonel Vish Naidoo said police were called to the hotel on Saturday morning when a 22-year-old woman claimed to be one of the “Baby Blacks” had raped her.

“Police forensic experts were on the scene at the hotel scouring the crime scene and taking samples on the spot.”

Naidoo said the charge was being investigated.

The New Age reported today that the New Zealand High Commission held top-level negotiations with police about the incident and to secure the whole team’s safe passage from South Africa on Saturday night.

The New Zealand side lost 22-16 to the Baby Boks at a packed Newlands Stadium on Friday evening.

An unnamed spokesperson for the New Zealand ministry of foreign affairs and trade told the newspaper it was aware an issue raised with the local police before the New Zealand team left.

“The team and team management co-operated fully and assisted police with their inquiries, after which police advised they were happy for all team members to travel out of South Africa,” the spokesperson said.
