Baby Boomers vs the Millennials

2011-07-02 11:31

There is a growing conflict in the workplace and we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Our new workforce – the millennials (born between 1980 and 2000, and also known as Generation Y) – have started to enter the workforce. Compared to their predecessors, this generation is highly educated.

They are also more confident and therefore more opinionated.

However, they lack experience, and in many cases, they lack soft skills crucial in the business world like relationship-building, communication, meeting deadlines and organisation.

Their managers – mostly Baby Boomers, like their parents – generally have more experience than education, and value the very soft skills that millennials lack.

It’s not surprising that there is rising conflict in the workplace.

People argue that this is just another generational gap, but if you look at the influences that moulded the millennial mindset and include the phenomenal technological changes we have experienced in the last two decades, then this is no ordinary generational clash.
