Baby abandoned on NYE

2011-01-04 10:49

A new-born baby was found abandoned on a pavement in Marble Hall on New Year’s Eve, the Mpumalanga health and social development department said today.

The “miracle baby”, weighing 2.7kg, was found unharmed by members of the public with a tag strapped to her hand reading “Panyaza“, spokesperson Cecil Motsepe said in a statement.

She was handed to police who took her to Matlala Hospital.

The MEC for health and social development Miriam Segabutla urged the mother to come forward so that her “socio-economic” needs could be assessed to enable the department to come up with possible solutions.

She said a social worker would assess whether the woman, her parents or any of her family members qualified for grants.

Motsepe said the MEC also said that if the woman had a matric the department could possibly put her in a programme where she would be trained as an auxiliary social worker or community development worker.

If she did not have a matric she would be encouraged to become a home-based care giver and earn a stipend to make ends meet, he said.
