Bad weather scuppers Zuma’s Eastern Cape visit

2013-10-18 15:08

President Jacob Zuma had to cancel a trip to the Eastern Cape at the eleventh hour because of bad weather, presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj has said.

“I can confirm President Zuma has cancelled the planned trip to Willowvale. The weather was so bad the president could not fly there,” Maharaj said.

Zuma was supposed to lay wreaths at the grave of the first ANC chaplain-general, Reverend Elias John Mqoboli, in his village in Nqabarha, on the outskirts of Willowvale and give a memorial lecture in his honour.

But the rain, which resulted in several cars getting stuck on the muddy gravel road, 18km from Willowvale, poured down nonstop.

Zuma’s visit would also have included a visit to the Mqoboli family and the unveiling of a public memorial in Nqabarha in memory of the late reverend.
