Bafana: No place for Nomvethe

2012-02-23 11:09

There is still no place for red-hot striker Siyabonga Nomvethe in Pitso Mosimane’s team that will face Senegal on Wednesday at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

With Bafana Bafana strikers firing blanks it was expected that Mosimane would recall the 34-year-old Moroka Swallows player to bolster his team.

Nomvethe has been a live-wire for Swallows, netting nine goals in the league so far, but there was no place for him in the team.

Instead Mosimane has stuck with Mamelodi Sundowns’ out-of-sorts striker Katlego Mphela and Jomo Cosmos’ Siyabonga Nontshinga. Mosimane has also roped in in-form Free State Stars striker Edward Manqele and Sundowns’ Lebohang Mokoena.

Mosimane has also left out Orlando Pirates players as they have a mountain to climb in the African Champions League tie against Angolan side Recreativo do Libolo. Pirates trail 3-1 from the first leg.

Bafana will welcome back number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who last played against Sierra Leone last year but his Kaizer Chiefs teammate Siphiwe Tshabalala was not included as he is out with an injury.

Captain Steven Pienaar is also back in the team.

The game against Senegal will be Bafana’s first competitive match of the year as they did not take part in the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Senegal were also disappointing as they left the tournament without a point after losing all their games.

Senegal have since fired their coach, Amara Traore, along with his technical staff, following the team’s poor performances at the tournament.

Karim Sega Diouf and Aliou Cisse have taken over in the interim as Senegal’s Lions coaches and have left out Newcastle’s Demba Ba from the team that will play Bafana.

The squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Wayne Sandilands

Defenders:
Morgan Gould, Erick Mathoho, Wayne Arendse, Punch Masenamela, Tsepo Masilela, Bongani Khumalo, Siboniso Gaxa, Anele Ngcongca

Midfielders: Thanduyise Khuboni, Thamsanqa Sangweni, George Maluleka, Teko Modise, Kagisho Dikgacoi, May Mahlangu, Daylon Claasen, Steven Pienaar, Thulani Serero

Strikers: Katlego Mphela, Siyabonga Nontshinga, Lebohang Mokoena, Edward Manqele
