Bafana climb up Fifa’s rankings

2011-02-02 13:47

Bafana Bafana have moved up to the 47th spot in the world ranking, their highest in five years.

In the latest rankings released by the world football body today Bafana moved four steps up from the 51st position they held last month and are now sitting on 562 points.

They are now ranked eighth on the African continent.

This augers well for Pitso Mosimane’s team, ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualification draw, meaning Bafana would avoid other big guns on the continent.

This is a remarkable achievement for Mosimane, who took the reigns when the team was languishing on the 66th spot seven months ago.

Ghana’s Black Stars have shot to the top of African rankings followed by Ivory Coast.

African champions Egypt were major losers after slipping to the third spot.

There were no changes at the top of the table, with world champions Spain are still at the summit on 1 887 points, followed by Holland who have amassed 1 723 points.

Asian Cup winners Japan have also stormed into the top 20 after moving 12 places up to the 17th spot following their triumph in Doha.
