Bafana hold off S Leone, stay on top of group

2010-10-11 07:30

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune produced a five-star performance to earn his team a credible goalless draw against Sierra Leone yesterday.

The draw still maintained Bafana’s position at the summit of the group with four points.

Pitso Mosimane predicted before this Africa Cup of Nations qualifier that it would be the most difficult game of his tenure and he was not far off with the host throwing everything at Bafana but found Khune in good form.

The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper ensured the two teams shared the spoils with a man of the match performance in the 76th minute when he denied Ishmael Bangura with a one hand save. Before then he denied Moustapha Bangura another scoring opportunity in the first half.

Bafana found it difficult to master their neat passing game as the pitch was too bumpy and the ball uncontrollable.

Mosimane started the game with Teko Modise in the absence of the injured Steven Pienaar and the Orlando Pirates midfielder fitted well in the team.

Bafana suffered a blow in the second half when Siphiwe Tshabalala had to be stretched off the field after sustaining what looked like a hip injury.

It was not one of Bafana’s best performances but a draw away from home would be a morale booster ahead of their next game against Egypt next year.

The reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions lost to Niger also yesterday and this will make their March encounter a must win for the North Africans, particularly as they are now at the bottom of Group G with only a point out of two games.
