Bafana were unlucky, says Dean Furman

Bafana Bafana’s captain, Dean Furman, says that South Africa were unlucky to lose to Algeria and that their next game is vital.

South Africa lost 3-1 to Algeria after going one nil ahead in their opening Africa Nations Cup game. They play Senegal next (Friday, January 23) and then Ghana (Tuesday, January 27).

Speaking in a post-match interview, Furman said: “When they [Algeria] changed to a 4-4-2 [system] and went a bit more direct with the two strikers up top, it did change the game. But overall we competed well and some of the football we played was outstanding.

“We were unlucky, as our coach said, not to get a result today.

“We won the penalty and TK [Tokelo Rantie] picked up ball ... he is the striker and he went for the corner, but hit the crossbar. When the next penalty comes along – he is a confident player – I’m sure he will put his hand up and take it.

“I maintain that we played very well. We wanted to get off to maximum points in the opener, so now the next game is vital for us. We have to lift our heads and play for the win because that is what we need now.”
