Bafana won’t play for a draw – Igesund

2013-01-26 19:24

Bafana Bafana will not deploy a cautious approach in their final group A match against Morocco.

With the South African team needing only a draw to ensure a place in the quarterfinals many thought Gordon Igesund would be defensive in his approach.

But the coach today said this would not be the case as he would be going for a win and not a draw.

“You cannot go to game playing for a draw and we will be offensive because we want to win comfortably. We know what we need to do and most importantly we expect them to come at us from the beginning of the game,” said Igesund.

He said they have not achieved anything and would not be complacent.

“We have a big job on Sunday and cannot afford to take our eyes off the ball. Morocco is a big football country and has a good team. We will give them the respect they deserve but we also have a job to do. It is not over yet.”

After winning their game against Angola on Wednesday Bafana are in pole position to win the group contest, which will mean staying at their Durban base for the quarterfinals.

Igesund said he has told the players to keep their feet on the ground and deliver on the field.

He sent mixed signals about the availability of Lehlohonolo Majoro and Tokelo Rantie, who missed yesterday’s training session.

Initially the duo was ruled out of the match but Igesund said the two would be subjected to a late fitness test.

“The doctor said if it comes to a push we may risk them but it is a decision we will have to take as and when it is required.”

The game was sold out less than 24 hours after Bafana’s victory over Angola.
