Bafana’s ranking drops – again

2012-03-07 11:15

It came as no surprise that Bafana Bafana continued their slide in the latest Fifa rankings.

The South African senior national team has dropped two more places to 60th in the list released today. However, they retained their 10th spot on the continent.

Last month Bafana dropped two places as a result of their non-participation at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Their goalless draw against Senegal’s Lions last Wednesday did not help their situation. Bafana have gone eight matches without a victory, two of which – against Niger and Zimbabwe – ended in defeat.

Coach Pitso Mosimane’s decision to downgrade the team’s two friendly matches against Zambia and Ghana to practice games did not do him any good either.

With the team’s downward spiral continuing unabated, Mosimane is under pressure to start getting results, particularly with the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers around the corner in June.

Bafana will not have any preparation game before taking on Ethiopia and Botswana in the qualifiers.

Newly crowned African champions, Zambia, have climbed two places to the fourth position while losing finalist Ivory Coast retained their top spot on the continent.

World champions Spain are still at the top of the Fifa rankings followed by Holland, who overtook Germany, after their victory over England in a friendly last week.
