ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete will be the new speaker of the National Assembly – for a second time.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe announced the new caucus appointments at a press conference in Parliament this afternoon.

Mbete was speaker from 2004 till 2008, when she also served a brief stint as deputy president. After not making it to the deputy presidency again in 2009, she chose to focus on party work full time.

Mbete succeeds Max Sisulu, who had been speaker for the past five years but who is understood to have been criticised within the party for appointing an ad hoc committee in Parliament to consider President Jacob Zuma’s response to the Public Protector’s report into the security upgrades at Nkandla.

Mbete will be deputised by Lechesa Tsenoli, who was minister of cooperative governance.

Chief whip Stone Sizani is set to be retained in the position as well as his deputy, Doris Dlakude.

Former Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni, who was on the ANC’s parliamentary list, has withdrawn from the list, Mantashe told journalists.
