Bam still on track for Miss Universe

Miss South Africa Melinda Bam can breathe a sigh of relief because she will still be representing the country at Miss Universe.

Earlier this month reports claimed that the international pageant faced imminent cancellation because of a failure to book a location on time – meaning Bam (23) would miss her chance to compete after passing the sash to first runner-up Remona Moodley for Miss World.

According to the organisers of Miss Universe in New York, the pageant will continue despite the date and venue not being announced.

“Our pageant has not been cancelled, but simply pushed back this year. Although we have not yet announced a date and location, we hope to do so very soon,” they said in an email sent to City Press.

However, the new date, speculated to be December 18, might present a logistical headache for the Miss SA camp as a new beauty would have been crowned by then, meaning Bam will no longer be the reigning queen.

Wendy Fuscher from Sun International, the Miss South Africa pageant owners, was quick to snuff out that concern.

She said that even though they will crown a new winner on December 9, Bam will still participate in Miss Universe.

“Melinda will be the one who goes, because the girl would be newly crowned, and still need a lot of training and preparation for that pageant,” she said.

In June, Sun International had the nation in a tizz when they announced that Bam would not be competing at Miss World owing to “personal reasons”.

City Press later revealed that part of those “personal reasons” was that Bam wanted a boob job to fit the perceived Miss Universe package of sexiness.

So she sent Moodley to compete with 116 beauties last weekend. But that didn’t work out so rosily for the Joburg beauty, who tanked so badly at the pageant that she didn’t even crack a top 30 spot.

Instead, she was placed at number 56 in the top model category and reached 35 in the beach fashion leg of the competition.

Locals watching the live broadcast of Miss World last Saturday took to Twitter to vent, claiming Bam “sabotaged” South Africa by not going.

Zagreus wrote: “Miss South Africa Remona Moodley did not feature anywhere at #MissWorld2012...what went wrong?”

Lawrence N wrote: “This Remona girl didn’t even make it to Top 30 bathong. Melinda Bam owes us an apology. #MissWorld2012.”

Leeyon wrote: “Lots of peeps on my TL asking who Remona Moodley is. Melinda Bam still has a lot of explaining to do. #MissWorld.”

Speaking to City Press this week, Moodley said she would do the pageant again if granted another chance because “I really wanted to try for the country”.

“The judges knew what they wanted and there was nothing I could do to change their minds. I carried myself with pride for my country,” said Moodley.

Bam was not available for comment as she was attending to a family matter.
