Ban the burka bashing

2010-05-08 10:38

Islam has gotten a bad reputation since 9/11 when America made one

of the world’s largest religions synonymous with terror.

Now Belgium has banned the burka, with France likely to follow.

I find public veiling deplorable and I’m not wild about the things

Rastas say about homosexuality either.

I’m waiting for Hare Krishnas to add some spice to their food and

to find a better hairstyle for their male followers.

I dislike all religions equally.

My idea of a perfect world is one where religion exists only as

folklore. A world where Catholic kids say: “Can you believe past generations

used to hold in high esteem an institution rife with rape?”

Unfortunately, it seems religion is here to stay.

Why must Muslims be treated like devils in turbans and

burkas?

Not every man with a long beard and turban is a Taliban

zealot.

Not every woman who covers her face is forced to do so.

So why must her right to serve her god fully clothed be a

transgression when it poses no grave danger to anyone?

Unfortunately, religions can’t be banned so Belgium has had to find

a plan-B and seems hell-bent on making being a Muslim in the country very

difficult.

According to Belgian MP Daniel Baquelaine, the full-face veil turns

a woman into a walking prison.

Being veiled can be oppressive but only for women who are forced to

cover up. There are 280?000 Muslims in Belgium but only 400 wear veils.

Let them serve their god with their mouths, bodies and dress code

like many other religions or ban religious dress codes altogether.

Away with skull caps. Put pants on Hare Krishna men. Get some

walking shoes for the Shembe faithful.

Interfering with how Muslims choose to worship is not only hateful

but spiteful as well.

And what’s up with Mr Baquelaine and French President Nicolas

Sarkozy speaking for Muslim women anyway?

Women have their own voices and their own experiences.

It’s not up

to the them to decide what is freedom and what is oppression, especially when

it comes to serving God.

After all, how offensive is a veil you don’t have to

wear?
